An organized medicine cabinet

I don’t know about your house, but our medicine cabinet in the kitchen has always been a huge thorn in my side.  It never stayed organized, despite my best intentions.  Well, my problems have all been solved now thanks to a pin I saw on Pinterest (remember, I told you about Pinterest on my snack stations post?  Have you checked it out yet?  It’s awesome.  You need an invite to join, so let me know if you’re interested!).  You can see the blog post HERE.

I thought this was brilliant!  I headed out to Big Lots a few days later to buy a new mattress for Kyrie, and while I was there I found the perfect containers!  The 3 drawer container was about $5, and the others were $1 each.  So for less than $10 I got a lovely, totally organized medicine cabinet that makes me just giddy!  I didn’t take before pictures because I was in way too big of a hurry to get it organized!

Here’s a shot of all 3 shelves:

Here’s the breakdown.  I knew I wanted/needed the adult pain meds on the very top shelf to keep the kids out.  They like to get themselves bandaids and are caught up on the counter frequently, so I wanted our medicines out of their way.  Then I put the kids’ medicines and outdoor related stuff (sunscreen, repellant, etc.) on the middle shelf, and I put anything first-aid related on the bottom shelf.  I got out my trusty labeler and went to town.  Our first aid kit we got for our wedding is stored on the right hand side, and then we have our ice pack, rice pack thingy, rubbing alcohol, and hydrogen peroxide on the left (that’s actually missing at the moment, but that’s where it belongs).  The little bottle is actually the cats’ travel anxiety drops from our vacation, and I’m not sure where to put those just yet.

And the top shelf.  Some things were too big to fit in the container (like the big bottles of NyQuil/DayQuil), so I just put those on the side.

I actually did this a couple of weeks ago, and it still looks just like this!  Super easy to keep organized this way.  Love!

Cambria’s first trip to the dentist

Our last dentist didn’t start seeing kids until they were a bit older, so Bri hadn’t been yet.  I decided to switch to a dentist that was closer to our house, and she was finally able to go.  I’m SO glad I switched because the old dentist didn’t even let parents back in the room with the kids!  I haaaaaaated that (and so did Kyrie and Asher!).  This new office is so great, and the hygienist and dentist even had me get right up there to see a few things they were doing.  She was such a champ!!  Here she is in the cool chair!

Here she is getting x-rays.  I thought she’d freak out when I had to leave the room, but she did awesome.  The hygienist, Heather, was so great with Bri and so patient.  She explained every little thing, let Bri touch all the instruments, and just made her very comfortable.

Then it was on to the cleaning.  They gave her some glasses to wear so their lights wouldn’t hurt her eyes.  She didn’t have any cavities, and he said her thumb sucking hasn’t done any damage to her teeth yet (WHEW!) but that she needs to stop when she’s 5.  He told her right now she has pretty princess teeth but that if she keeps sucking her thumb, her teeth will look like a bunny rabbit’s.  In the van on the way home, she said, “Mom, do bunnies suck their thumbs?”  I said no, and then she said, “Then why are their teeth pointed out?”  Ha!

First day of school, 2011

It’s hard to believe our babies are in 4th and 1st grade now!  Check out the first day of school post from last year and see how much they’ve changed (Asher especially)!!!

This year Derk wasn’t able to come drop them off on the first day like he did last year.  I was bummed about that.  These are the best pictures I got of them before we left.  It was super sunny (as usual) and also windy, so that didn’t make for the best pictures.  Kyrie just looks so mature now, doesn’t she?  Crazy.

Their school offers all students free breakfast AND lunch (so nice for the grocery budget, let me tell you!), so Bri and I sat with them while they ate.

Dropping them off was hard.  Kyrie was so sweet and wanted to walk Asher all the way to his classroom.  Asher is all smiles in this picture, but right after that was when I told him it was time for me to go.  That’s when he got upset.  He grabbed onto my neck so tight, and I had THE hardest time leaving him there.  Luckily my urge to prevent him from seeing me cry helped me get out of there fast.  If he’d seen me getting upset, it would have been all over!  Kyrie was right there and concerned for her brother.  I had to force her to walk away before she ended up being late for class!  By the time we got to Kyrie’s class the teacher was shooing all the parents out, so I didn’t get a very good picture of her at her desk.  Sad smile

Speaking of teachers, Asher’s teacher from last year moved up to teaching 4th grade and is Kyrie’s teacher this year!  We LOVE Mrs. V. and are extremely thrilled Kyrie will have her this year.  Asher’s teacher is Mrs. Swope, and she’s actually on maternity leave for the first 2 months.  The sub is Miss Butler, and she seems really nice.  Here’s to a great school year!

Happy cats

We aren’t the only ones glad to be home. Our cats have made it undeniably clear that they are loving being back home as well. Smile

Happy 31st birthday, Derk!

Today Derk turned 31, and he was NOT happy about it.  The kids came in first thing and wished him a happy birthday, but when I tried he told me I wasn’t allowed to say it because it wasn’t really happening.  Winking smile  We got a babysitter and our good friends, the Swensons, took us out to dinner to Outback.  The last time we went there was several years ago (never here in Yuma), and it wasn’t very good at all from what we remembered.  But this meal was fantastic, and I promptly came home and looked up the recipe for their rye bread they serve as an appetizer.  Oh, my, that stuff is way too good!  I found a great recipe and can’t wait to try it (if it tastes the same, I’ll make sure to post it)!

Here’s the birthday boy doing what he loves most!  I asked for a smile, but he really wasn’t thrilled about preserving the memory of this particular day.  This was my second attempt at a picture and was much better than the first, if that says anything.  Winking smileaugust 003

And one of us together!  I realized recently that I have very few photos of us together (usually I’m behind the camera!), so I’m trying to be better about that.  He looks so tired in this picture, but it’s the best I’ve got!august 007

Happy birthday, Derk!  I am still crazy about you, even though you’re 31.  Winking smile
