Cambria’s 5th birthday party

How is my baby 5 years old?!

We had her party today, and it was SO crazy but SO fun. There ended up being about 13 kids total, which was beyond busy! A couple friends came 20 minutes early, and then we had 2 friends that were over an hour late. A pretty rocky start, to say the least! She had a fabulous time, though. We chose a rainbow theme this year, and I love the way it turned out for the most part. I found a cake that I just fell in love with, and that’s what hooked me onto the rainbow party idea. Unfortunately, I made the wonderful decision to try a brand new frosting recipe on party day, and it didn’t cover my cake very well. It ended up being too thin, and you can see the layers through the frosting. Sad smile I was so bummed and just wanted it to be perfect!!! I even scraped all the frosting off and tried to thicken it up with more powdered sugar and then re-frost, but that didn’t work either. After 2 hours of frosting, Derk said I really needed to just call it quits – it was just going to be eaten after all! The cake had 5 layers (for 5 years), and each layer was a different color of the rainbow. Then I made a little pennant banner for the top that says “Cambria” and put rainbow colored gum balls all around the bottom. The candles were exactly what I wanted and were from Target. I forgot to take a picture of the cake as soon as we cut into it, but luckily I remembered before the last 2 pieces were gone!

Along with the cake we made rainbow water, rainbow cookies, rainbow jello, and rainbow kettle corn. The kettle corn didn’t turn out very rainbow-y, but the kids still thought it was super cool.

For the goodie bags, I just used white paper bags and then had Cambria make labels with a hand-written “Thank you” on them. She got really tired after writing so many, but she did awesome!

I had several games planned, but for some reason those kids just wanted to play in the back yard! We managed to get through 2 of the games – musical chairs and a balloon game where you have to keep your balloon in the air the longest. I made paddles out of paper plates and popsicle sticks, and the kids used those to hit their balloons with. The one game I really waned to do was where you see who can push a Skittle across the floor the fastest using only your nose! I thought that would be so fun, but there were just way too many people and not nearly enough time.

I decided to make her a birthday shirt to wear along with her new “birthday princess” crown. I saw this rolled fabric flower tutorial online a few weeks ago, and it was super easy. I meant to make 5 flowers for the shirt, but I just didn’t have enough time with all the other party stuff I had going on.

As is typical of Cambria, she had several outfit changes during the duration of the party. Winking smile She had to have a wardrobe change prior to opening her gifts, and then she had to immediately model each outfit she received. Smile Here she is opening some of her presents!
