I apologize if you're hearing about this for the first time from our blog. I've tried to call everybody, but it's been hard.
Over Labor Day weekend, I started having a lot of trouble breathing and noticed my heart rate was very high. Since I have a history of blood clots, I was very concerned. So I got in to my doctor's office that next business day (Tuesday). My heart rate was at 111 (normal is between 60-100), so he did an EKG, blood work, an echocardiogram (which is an ultrasound of your heart) and a chest x-ray. He told me everything came back normal and to see him in a week. I assumed the chest x-ray would have shown any clots, so I tried to relax.
By Friday, things were worse. I couldn't even walk 5 feet without practically gasping for air. I called my doctor's office immediately and found out the office is closed on Fridays. So I started doing some research online, and I found out that blood clots don't show up on x-rays because they don't give off any shadow. I was livid and very frustrated. My doctor knows my history. I went in complaining of shortness of breath, and he didn't even do any tests that would test for clots!
So Derk came home early and took me to the ER. When I got here, my heart rate was at 130. They did another EKG, which came back normal. After 4 hours, they finally got the CT scan done. The doctor's official diagnosis was that my lungs were "riddled with clots". Both lungs were nearly completely closed off. He said it was a very good thing I came in when I did.
To dissolve the clots, they're giving me injections of blood thinner. It's the same stuff I was on while I was pregnant with Kyrie and Asher. Once I go home, I'll be taking a pill form that will keep my blood thinned out and prevent future clots.
As of now, I have no idea when I'll be home. I haven't seen a doctor since last night in the ER. I've asked 3 nurses throughout today to please get a doctor in here so I can ask him some questions, but I have yet to see anyone.
I'm doing okay. I'm in a little bit of pain now. I haven't had any pain at all since all this started, so I think the clots breaking up and dissolving is what is causing the pain? Maybe? I want to take a shower, but they won't let me. My rear end hurts from laying down for the last 25 hours straight, and I'm bored out of my mind being here by myself. Mostly I'm just very relieved that I'm getting help. And I'm furious with my doctor. Beyond furious. I'll be speaking to the insurance company and the state medical board and whoever else I have to in order to make sure he doesn't act so negligent to any other patients.
I'll post updates as I get them.
