Kindergarten graduation

Where did the time go? It feels like we just brought her home from the hospital, just watched her take her first steps, just took her to her first day of Kindergarten....and today she graduated on to first grade. Now I know why my parents always joked that they were going to put bricks on our heads.

I'm the Room Parent for her class, so it was a bit more special for me because I was really a part of the whole planning process. The other parents are so great and have always overwhelmed me with how willing they are to volunteer. It makes me look forward to helping out in future years because of how smoothly all the events I planned this year went.

I took so much video of the ceremony that I'm probably a huge nerd. Derk was laughing at me as I videoed her walking in, but I don't care. Let me preface this by saying that the videos are pretty unstable, but that's because I had Asher climbing all over me to see what I was recording. I kept telling him to just look up front because he could see it first hand that way, but I guess looking through the camera is way more fun. So here she is - walking in :) - and looking oh-so-cute. She's in the green shirt, by the way.

The ceremony was cute. The kids recited some of the poems they learned throughout the year and were really proud of themselves. Kyrie was most excited about learning the alphabet in sign language.

The proud graduate!!

And just because he's just too cute, here's a picture of Asher enjoying the refreshments after graduation. He was so excited watching his big sister up front and kept begging to go sit with her.

So this is love....

This is to illustrate my daughter's newest love affair. We quickly realized she wasn't eating the chicken - she was just sucking off the ranch we gave her to dip it in. And not only was she eating it, but she was wearing it as well. You know you have a cute kid when they're still adorable, even covered in ranch dressing. :)

Do you think he was sleepy?

Asher was acting a lot more cranky than normal, so I knew he was extra tired and would need to go to bed early. While I was loading the dishwasher, I asked him if he wanted me to take him to bed, and he said, "No!!! I don't WANT to go to sleep, Mommy!" He ran off. I finished loading and then went to look for him.....

We're back!

We were going to drive home yesterday, but Drew and Rebecca begged us to stay another night. They bribed us with another rousing game of Settlers of Catan, and who are we to refuse a fun game night? :) I almost won, too! I only lost by 1 point. Not too shabby. We'll definitely have to add that game to our collection.

We couldn't get out of Seattle that easily. Cambria had to make the trip complete by throwing up one last time. This time it was at McDonalds where we met Drew for lunch on our way out of town. She's been doing fine since and even devoured a bowl of oatmeal this morning, so I'm keeping my fingers (and toes!) crossed! I'm just praying that my sweet little nieces don't get whatever Cambria has. Yuck.

Our drive from Seattle back to Moscow wasn't bad at all. I'd been up really late talking to Rebecca, which was a blast. Then my mind was racing all night long with all different kinds of things, so it took me a while to fall asleep. Derk woke up not feeling well, so I knew I'd have to drive most of the way. Luckily he was able to drive the first half, so I took a really nice nap. The kids were extremely well-behaved and did so well in the car.

The kids were so happy to see us (and us them!). Asher was the most excited. He kept saying, "You're here! You're here!" over and over and had a permanent smile on his face all night long. He kept bouncing back and forth between Derk and I - couldn't make up his mind who he wanted to cuddle. It was priceless. Not priceless enough to leave them again any time soon, though. It was too hard!

It's weird to be home. What has felt like home for the last 4 years doesn't really feel like home any more. It's like it's just a temporary place to rest our head until we're really home - in Yuma. It's so neat to feel that way and to know that Yuma does feel like home now. We're so excited to move in to our new place and to begin our fun lives down there!

So here are some pictures of our return trip home. I wish I could have snapped pictures of the kids as we arrived back at Drew and Rebecca's to pick them up, but that was the last thing on my mind at that moment. These pictures are mostly for Asher (okay, and Treven ;) ) because of his (their) adoration for airplanes.

Derk and Cambria boarding the plane.

Our window was so foggy between the panes where we couldn't get to it,
so this didn'tturn out like I wanted, but I just love the view
of the clouds as you're flying through them!

And this is how she was the entire flight home.
Poor baby.

Our trip to Yuma!

In case I haven't mentioned it, Derk accepted a job in Yuma, Arizona. We came down last week to meet his employer and look for a house. We found a condo -- 3 bedrooms, 2.5 baths, 2 car garage, granite counter tops, tons of counter space, and we have the option of buying it if we like it. The owner is super nice and is really desperate to get rid of it. I have tons of pictures of the condo, but I'll be posting tons of other pictures, so I'll spare you any further picture overload. :)

Anyway, we've had a pretty eventful week here. We've learned a few lessons throughout this week that will stay with us for the rest of our lives:

Lesson Learned #10-- Never try and save money by booking a cheaper hotel room again. Because cheaper apparently means the room comes complete with bugs, mold, stains on everything and nasty used condoms on the floor.

Lesson Learned #9-- Having a puking child with diarrhea is even less fun when staying at said hotel.

Lesson Learned #8-- Receptionists at money-saving hotels don't like having to get up off their rears to get you clean towels and bedding.

Lesson Learned #7-- There simply cannot be another town in the entire world that has as many dollar stores as Yuma does. I've counted 8 so far.

Lesson Learned #6-- Kids don't care if the car you're driving is a snazzy 2008 rental car. They'll puke in it anyway. Lots of times.

Lesson Learned #5-- Never buy a puppy from a guy on the streets, who claims the dog is a purebred and is worth far more than the $120 he's charging, no matter how unbearably adorable said puppy is.

Lesson Learned #4-- Some guys think it's cool to lay around in nothing but their underwear with the doors and curtains wide open.

Lesson Learned #3-- You can scarf a meal down in 3 minutes flat when you're afraid your kid is going to puke in the middle of a restaurant.

Lesson Learned #2-- My sick 18 month old would rather sleep on the floor, under a table, than on the bed.

And my favorite Lesson Learned of all......

Lesson Learned #1-- When you see armored cars, military dudes with guns and huge search lights, it's time to turn around. You're on the WRONG ROAD, buddy!

Let me explain that one a bit. Derk heard about these crazy cool sand dunes and wanted to go check them out. He decided to take the "back way", which was my first clue that this wasn't going to turn out right. How would he know what the "back way" was in a town we've never been in before? But, alas, I had to let him learn the hard way, just like any good mother would do for her kids. Because, yes, I do consider him to be one of my children. Sometimes.

So we're driving down this "back way", and the pavement ends. It's gravel from here on out. That was the first time I said, "Derk, I think it's time to turn around." But it wasn't the last time. He wanted to keep going, he could see the dunes off to the right, there had to be a connecting road. Somewhere. We drive a bit further, and we drive past the armored cars and big military dudes with guns. Time #2 for telling Derk to turn around, but he wants to keep going, now the dunes are just right across this ditch thing, which must be for irrigation, there has to be a connecting road.

We keep driving, and now we start passing border patrol vehicles with these cage type things in the back. Time #3 for telling Derk to turn around. He still insists that this must be the right road. I had to ask him if he was seriously that ignorant, and his reply of "I'll turn around in a few more minutes if I don't come to a connecting road, okay?" proved to me that the answer to my question was TRUE, TRUE, TRUE!!!

He finally realizes that, hey, there's no connecting road here, I'd better turn around! So he turns around, and we get pulled over by border patrol. Luckily he was a nice guy. He said the dunes across the ditch, which Derk learned was actually to catch illegal aliens, NOT for irrigation, were actually in Mexico. We were RIGHT on the border. 10 feet the other way, and we'd have been in deep doo-doo in Mexico with no passports to get back into the USA.

Derk's response to the whole thing? "Okay, I concede. The dudes in armored cars with guns and search lights should probably have tipped me off that this wasn't the right road." Does that mean he was saying I was right? Yes, and I actually made him say those 3 words (you. were. right.) just so I could really savor the moment.

Now on to the pictures from our trip.

We had to wake up way too early to catch our flight.

But she was all smiles by the time we were in the air.

It's amazing what things keep them occupied. She buckled and
unbuckled that seat belt for a good 15 minutes.

Mommy and Bri on the second flight (from Salt Lake to Yuma). She was
exhausted and was desperate for a nap, so I
strapped her in the Mei Tai so she'd stop
fighting and fall asleep. So smart. :)

Some highlights of Arizona scenery.

Here are the dunes we were TRYING to locate that night.
They're enormous.

Illegal aliens even try to sneak across the border over the dunes,
so they have border patrol dune buggies.

Derk and Cambria swimming at our hotel
(she's freaking out because there's a leaf in the water).

Cambria and I in the hot tub at our hotel.

Beautiful Cambria admiring a beautiful flower.

We wore her out. :)

My poor sick baby.

Trying to figure out how the fountain works.

It's been a fun trip, but we're anxious to get back to our other babies. They've been having such a fun time with my sister-in-law, Rebecca (you can visit her blog to see pictures of their fun week), and we're so grateful to Rebecca and Drew for watching them for us. It's been so fun to get to know the town and to scout out all the fun things for us to do when we move down here, and we can't wait to take Kyrie and Asher to all the fun places we've found. In just 2.5 short weeks we'll be Arizona residents!

Some serious bed-head!

Cambria's had a hard time sleeping since we've been in Yuma staying at a hotel. She's not used to sleeping in bed with us, and she's discovered that she's quite free to get up as she pleases. Anyway, after she woke up from her nap today, I just had to snap a picture of her because her hair was too funny! And of course I spent several extra minutes making her hair totally cute this morning. Go figure. :)

Fun in Seattle

We left around 5am on Monday morning to drive over to Seattle. We wanted to go over and spend time with Derk's brother and his family before moving, and my sister-in-law, Rebecca, offered to watch our kids for us for a week while we flew to Yuma to meet with Derk's new employer and secure a house.

Monday was a laid back day. Derk took a nap in the afternoon, and Rebecca and I took the kids outside to play. The weather did everything but snow, but we had fun. :) It even got hot enough for 10 minutes or so for the kids to run in the sprinklers. After Drew got home from work, we went on a walk.

Lauren and Cambria in the stroller.

Asher and Abbie - aren't they sweet?

Brothers with their daughters - Drew and Lauren on the left,
Derk and Cambria on the right.

We decided to hit Point Defiance Zoo on Tuesday. Derk and I were flying out early Wednesday morning, so we thought it would be a lot of fun to spend the day at the zoo. Drew wasn't able to make it, but we sure had fun with Rebecca, Abbie and Lauren.

Asher, Kyrie and Abbie (I can't recall what they're looking at),
and Asher looking at some weird-looking animal, which
he said was a "huuuuuge pig".

Cambria looking at the same weird-looking animal,
and Lauren being such a good sport in the stroller.

Kyrie with Lauren, who is just not amused :)
and Kyrie and Abbie posing in the shark's mouth.

Cambria looking at the sharks.

Okay, so I tend to take a ton of pictures from behind,
but I think they're just too cute! :)

We just love cousins.
